'Conference
of the Birds' Shadow Puppetry 2008
|
With
a colleague and on behalf of Faceless Theatre Company, we went
into primary and secondary schools in the Leeds and Bradford area to
show classes how easy it is to turn cardboard, tape and sticks into
an epic Sufi poem. |
When
those materials go behind the screen they transform and become characters.
This was performed using a large scale shadow screen, with enough room
for six children and me, manipulating the puppets and scenery. |
'Conference of the Birds' live illustration with Faceless Theatre Company 2007 Bretton - Bradford - Halifax - Scunthorpe - Kendal |
In 2007 I spent my summer weekends working with Faceless on 'Conference of the Birds', an old story about a group of birds that go in search of their bird God utopia. I helped with the initial research and development for the stage and props the year before and they asked me if I would like to be involved as a 'live' illustrator with the show this year. |
The performance involved actors, puppets and community participants. My involvement 'on stage' was to draw scenery and give visual clues to what was happening within the narrative, drawing onto large paper screens with markers and spray paints, all done very quickly. |
